Profile in Inspiration – Erin Ulric, Health Committee Chair

“My first visit to Petit Trou de Nippes with the Colorado Haiti Project was in 2004. I had just graduated from college and was just about to start a cushy job as an actuarial assistant for Liberty Mutual. Fast forward two years later when I quit that job and decided to move to Haiti – a place that forever changed me. Following this experience, I wrote the following in an application essay for my Master’s in Public Health program, words which still ring true for me. “There are days when I would love to go back to my old reality, to my child-like expectations that everyone in need will be provided for.  But I can’t.  I can no longer plead ignorance.  I can no longer pretend that one of the most basic human rights is not being denied to millions of people around the world, people whose only difference from me is their birth country.  I have realized a moral responsibility to make every possible effort to change the things I have seen.” The Colorado Haiti Project is working from the ground up to promote and support real change in Haiti. Working on the board, and as the Chair of the Community Health Committee, has provided me with an opportunity to continue to use my public health expertise and combine it with my love for Haiti. The people in Petit Trou have so much to contribute to their own lives and the lives of others within their communities. It has been amazing to watch the transformation of this special place over the past decade and be able to support the work that they do.”
